The bold KULA wall basket was hand-woven by one of an all-female, Ugandan weaving group. This collective was formed in the wake of the late 1990’s Allied Democratic forces war in the Rwenzori region, which left many widows and orphans behind. The handicraft group was started by a group of six women hoping to support their families. Numbers of weavers steadily increased and now the group enables over 100 women to earn a fair wage from basket weaving.
KULA is woven from raffia and banana leaf stem, featuring a most striking radial pattern in orange, black and white geometric designs. Outstanding hung alone on a wall and equally arresting when displayed in a group arrangement, this shallow woven basket also makes an attractive and practical fruit bowl or bread basket. This woven basket could also be used in the bathroom to display soaps or toiletries and it would look pretty on a dressing table, keeping jewellery and trinkets together. Traditionally, these baskets were (and are still) used for serving a local meal called Akaro (mingled millet flour) and used in wedding ceremonies in parts of Uganda.
Buying a woven wall basket empowers these Ugandan weavers to send their children to school and to earn a greater say in household decision-making than they had before. These baskets empower women, and in bringing one home, you support this important work.
